"This past Sunday, the Kindness Club – an organized group of Hope for Korah youth – went out into the community of Korah and invited 100+ strangers who appeared “in need” and invited them to a celebration of Easter.
The youth, their leaders, and several HFK staff spent much time in preparation for the program and meal, as well as setting up the celebration space to feel comfortable and celebratory. Their preparation was clearly evident throughout, dignifying their honored guests as they dressed in traditional clothing and graciously extended intentional hospitality.
As we watched the youth throughout the event, I was reminded of a priest named Abbe Pierre who formed an organization called ‘Emmaus” in the 1960s/70s. In it, he brought the poor together to help the poorer still, teaching them in doing so that generosity is not only for the “ rich”, but is something we can and must each practice regardless of our economic status; we ALL have something to give.
The Kindness Club youth gave what they had – their service, their artistic talents, their time, their compassion and their hope– and in doing so, brought dignity to their guests. It was a beautiful time together. Kudos to the kids for sure. Kudos also to the HFK youth staff, who work day in and day out to empower these youth and others with regular opportunities to enact the principles of character they teach them.
Generosity is a responsibility of each of us."
