Tigist and her husband have a strong bond, and both desire to see a better future for their four children.
Born in Gojam, Tigist grew up with her mother until she was 9 years old, and then was given to be raised by a distant relative. Her father, who was a soldier, passed away a few years later. The family she was living with moved to Addis Ababa, however after some time Tigist left them and found work as a maid. At 17 years old, Tigist met a man who became her husband. A few years later, they had their first child together. Tigist’s husband used to be a vegetable supplier and had a very profitable business, which unfortunately was shut down during the pandemic. Together, they took their savings and opened a small roadside food stand, where they also served traditional Ethiopian drinks. For some time, this was also successful, however due to new regulations they were forced to close. Currently Tigist's husband sells shoes on the street with a friend and Tigist cooks on call for different events.
They live in a small house made of wood and metal sheets, next to a chicken breeding room from their landlord. The strong smell is negatively affecting the health of their youngest child. With Tigist at home caring for the baby, her husband's meager income is not enough to provide their day-to-day needs, much less pay for needed medical care for the family. Often Tigist will help her neighbors with household chores in exchange for food.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Tigist’s family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, education, and community programs.
