Fikir is a strong, energetic mother seeking to change her family’s future through dedication and hard work.
Her family is from Kobo, located in Northern Ethiopia, where Fikir was raised by her parents. She came to Addis Ababa at a young age, with her niece, to work as a maid. Determined to continue her education, Fiker was able to attend night school up until grade 11. It was during this challenging time that she met her husband who had also passed through difficult life circumstances. After they got married, Fikir worked as a secretary for a broker until she was eight months pregnant. She returned to work after giving birth to her daughter, working for herself out of a plastic rental house. Unfortunately, her previous employer made things difficult by demolishing her workplace, causing Fikir to quit the business, and become a stay-at-home mom.
Presently Fikir and her family live a small house made up of wood and mud. It is very hard to provide food for the family as Fikir is no longer working and her husband’s work is seasonal. Even so, Fikir is well educated and has basket weaving skills. Together Fikir and her husband plan to work hard and find a means of stable employment to build a better future.
Monthly sponsorship will provide Fikir's family with holistic support such as food, housing, medical care, spiritual care, counselling, education, health and life skills training, income generation and business development opportunities. Being part of HFK’s Family Empowerment Program will also give this family an opportunity to participate in many of our youth, education, and community programs.
