Business training and employment skills training are an essential part of our programming. As part of the Business Development & Launch phase of sponsorship, families attend business training provided by local organizations as well as our Income Generation Specialist.
We have also developed a S.M.A.R.T. Business Plan which is used by our Ethiopian social work staff to help program participants prepare and assess the viability of their business ideas. The S.M.A.R.T. Business Plan includes a variety of specific questions that prompt individuals to consider the costs, achievability, demand, location and timeline for their business. This collaborative process helps HFK staff and participants to determine any needs for specialized training, support, and/or partnership with others prior to launching a successful business or pursuing employment. Not all HFK families will have the capability to open their own business, so in these cases the S.M.A.R.T. Plan will be used to help determine goals to help them find suitable employment.
